The Yasawas are a chain of 20 sun-drenched islands stretching northeasterly from the top of the Mamanucas 90km/54miles out into Bligh Water.
Their remote locale, white sand beaches, clear blue lagoons and varied terrains make the Yasawas one of the most attractive destinations in Fiji. But it is because of their remoteness that commercial development has never taken hold.
There are three ways to enjoy the islands – one at the budget level or at the other extreme of two luxury properties. The other is to cruise the islands.
The Yasawas have been used as filming locales for the “Blue Lagoon” movies and have served as the backdrop for an Australian TV series and major US produced motion picture.
The Adventure Capital of Fiji
Pacific Harbour Fiji is sort on a mini metropolis located on the south coast of Viti Levu about 50km west of Suva. A long stretch of uninterrupted beach overlooks Beqa Passage with Beqa Island and Lagoon in the distance. Resorts on this coastline are not as prolific as the Coral Coast further west, and that’s part of the attraction. Pacific Harbour is known as the adventure capital of Fiji, where you can experience mild excitement to full-blown adrenaline rushes through activities suitable for all ages.
Pacific Harbour is a good base from which to explore the mountainous hinterland of Viti Levu, with the Capital Suva a leisurely day trip away. It’s easy enough to hire a car and drive yourself, or you could arrange a car with your own driver from one of the resorts. Public buses also ply coastal Queens Road if you want to travel as the locals do.

Located south of Viti Levu and west of Beqa Lagoon, Vatulele is a 25 minute light aircraft flight from Nadi international airport.
This idyllic low-lying island is 13km long, and covered with palm and rainforest. A barrier reef forms a lagoon on the eastern and northern ends, and there is good fishing and diving.
There are four villages that subsist largely on farming and fishing, and the island is a major producer of traditional masi, or tapa cloth.
Vatulele is famous for its archaeological sites, which include ancient rock paintings of faces and stenciled hands, and its limestone caves and pools, which are home to the bright red prawns held sacred by the islanders.
A favourite among nature lovers and divers.
Located roughly 100km/62miles south of Viti Levu, Kadavu is Fiji’s fourth-largest island.
This irregularly shaped island has few roads. You arrive at Vunisea airfield, and from there virtually all transportation is by boat.
The island is great for nature lovers and those wishing to pursue more adventure (diving, surfing and kayaking) and a look at traditional Fijian lifestyle and culture.
The Great Astrolabe Reef, one of the largest continuous reefs in the world, wraps from the northeast to the southern side of the island. Having maintained its strong cultural values, the general population leads fairly subsistence lifestyles in sleepy coastal villages dwarfed by mountainous jungles and waterfalls plummeting from the hilltops.
The island’s deeply indented bays, fringed by coral reefs and mangrove forest, provide habitat to a host of birds, including the endemic Kadavu musk parrot. Forest openings reveal lizards basking on rocks, and butterflies spiralling skyward in a lazy dance.
History, culture and Fijian life.
Fiji’s capital offers a different perspective on island life. While many visitors head straight from Nadi to the beaches and island resorts, Suva rewards those interested in the country’s history, culture and everyday life.
On a peninsula overlooking a natural harbour, the city grew from a small waterfront settlement into Fiji’s administrative and commercial centre. It replaced Levuka, on the island of Ovalau, as the capital during British colonial rule. Land reclamation gradually transformed parts of its mangrove-lined waterfront as the city expanded.
Today, Suva’s busy port remains an important connection to the wider Pacific. Markets, colonial architecture and a lively food scene give visitors plenty of reasons to spend time in the capital and experience Fiji beyond its resorts.
